Weekly: rinse the foam
Thirty seconds under the tap. The foam pre-filter protects the impeller, and it is washable — which means half the replacement packs sold are for something you did not need to buy.
Monthly: open the pump
Unplug it, lift it out, and open the impeller housing. Remove the rotor, rinse the slime off it and out of the chamber with a brush, and reassemble. This is the step almost nobody does, and it is the one that decides pump life.
Carbon on a calendar
Two to four weeks, whatever it looks like. Carbon is spent long before it appears dirty.
Never let it run dry
A dry pump is a dead pump. A fountain with a low-water indicator is worth paying for precisely because of this.
This does not replace your machine’s manual. Sensor thresholds, cycle delays and temperature limits differ between models, and the manufacturer’s instructions for yours take precedence over anything written here.
The questions owners ask
How often should the pump be opened?
Monthly is a reasonable habit, and sooner if the note of the fountain changes. Biofilm builds inside the impeller housing where no filter reaches and no rinse touches.
My fountain is still noisy after cleaning. Now what?
Check the water level first — a pump drawing air is the loudest failure there is. If it is full and clean and still wrong, a replacement pump costs a fraction of a new fountain, and we review the original parts for the common models.
