Clipper blades and blade care

Blade numbering is one of the few genuinely standardised things in this niche, and it is worth learning: the number describes the cut length, and a #10 leaves about 1.5 mm (0.06 in) whatever brand stamped it. What is not standardised is the mount — A5 snap-on blades interchange across many brands, while several consumer clippers take nothing but their own. We list blades by cut length, material and fitment, and note which run cool.

What we recommend

  1. Oster Cryogen-X size 10 clipper blade

    Oster Cryogen-X size 10 blade

Oster’s size 10 blade in cryogenically hardened steel, which Oster states runs cooler than a standard blade. It is the default length for a body clip.

    • The single most useful blade to own — most clips start and end at size 10
    • Cryogenic hardening is a real process, and cooler blades are what let a session continue
    • Sold separately, which is why an A5 machine looks cheaper than it is

Best for: Anyone who has just bought an A5-fitting clipper and needs the first blade.

  2. Andis CeramicEdge SnapOn number 30 clipper blade

    Andis CeramicEdge SnapOn No. 30

A size 30 blade cutting at about 0.5 mm (0.02 in), in hardened carbon steel with a ceramic cutting edge. It is a detail and clean-up blade, not a body blade.

    Size
    30 — 1/50 inch, about 0.5 mm (0.02 in)
    Material
Hardened carbon steel, ceramic cutting edge

    • Ceramic runs cooler than steel-on-steel, which matters most on the areas this blade is used for
    • Half a millimeter reaches between pads where nothing else will
    • Far too short for a body clip — this is not a general-purpose blade

Best for: Paw pads and clean-up work, alongside a size 10 rather than instead of it.

    • Not listed on Amazon US at the time of checking

Best for: Owners who want a tidy trim rather than a clip, on an A5 machine they already own.

Best for: Clean-up work in summer, and as a spare so a blunt blade never stops a session.

Finding your need in clipper blades

Clipping shorter

The blade size decides the length left behind. It is the property that separates one head from another on the same clipper.

Andis 72615 UltraEdge 4FC

Leaving some length

A taller head keeps hair on, which many coats require. Clipping too short does not suit every breed.

Cosyonall Size 40 replacement blades, 2-pack

Fitting the clipper you own

Two similar-looking pet clippers do not share a blade mount, and nothing adapts. The stated list of compatible models comes before the cutting height.

Andis CeramicEdge SnapOn No. 30

The buyer behind each kind, in clipper blades

Blunt head
A head that pulls despite cleaning and oiling is worn. It is the clipper's wear part.
Several lengths
Changing the head rather than the clipper covers several lengths with a single motor.
Spare head
A clean head in reserve lets you alternate while the other is cleaned, and avoids overheating on long sessions.

The downsides that come with clipper blades

A blade cut for one precise pet clipper
The mounting system is specific to each brand, sometimes to each range. That is the structural constraint here.
Short head against protecting the coat
A very short head clips right down and exposes the skin. Some breeds must not be clipped short: ask first.
A steel you can sharpen or a ceramic that stays cool
Ceramic heats less, which counts on long sessions, and chips if the clipper falls. Steel takes knocks better.

The questions people ask about clipper blades

Are heads interchangeable across brands?

No. The mounting system is specific to each brand and often to each range. Check the exact reference.

How do I know what length to leave?

It depends on the breed, the coat and the season. Some breeds must not be clipped short: ask a groomer or the vet.

The head is hot — what now?

Regular breaks, oiling, and alternating with a second head. Always check the temperature against your hand before putting the head back on the animal.

When should a head be replaced?

When it still pulls after cleaning, oiling and checking the charge. Those three checks eliminate most false diagnoses.

Can a head be resharpened?

Steel heads can, by a specialist sharpener. On expensive models that is sometimes cheaper than a new head.

Ceramic or steel?

Ceramic heats less on long sessions and chips at the slightest fall. Steel is more forgiving.

How is a head cleaned?

Brush after every use to lift the hair, then oil on the teeth. Oiling over the hair forms a paste that jams.

Does a cat need a different blade?

A cat's hair is finer and its skin thinner, which calls for a closely toothed blade and a cutting height that leaves a few millimeters. A close blade meant for a dog can injure.

Worth remembering, on clipper blades

Heads are not swapped between brands, and the length to leave depends on the breed — some must not be clipped short. Check the temperature against your hand before every return to the animal, and alternate two heads over a long session.

Clipper blades in brief

    Clipper blades, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. Enough of these 10 products name the same row — size — for a column to qualify, and too few publish a figure in it: the column would compare blanks rather than models. Each product page says what its own maker published.
