Litter box odor filters and refills

Automatic boxes control odor with three things and sell you all of them: a carbon filter in the lid, a deodorising cartridge over the drawer, and the rubber seal around it. Only two do much. We separate them, give the running cost of each, and are direct about the ones that are perfume rather than filtration — a distinction that matters more than usual in a room where a cat has to want to go.

The buyer behind each kind, in odor filters & refills

Covered box
This is the format where the filter has the most effect: air leaves by a single point that can be treated.
Box in a living room
The filter never replaces cleaning, it accompanies it. A poorly kept box smells despite any filter at all.
Several cats
Filters saturate far faster. The replacement rhythm follows the number of animals.

The downsides that come with odor filters & refills

Filter against cleaning
No filter compensates for a box that is not kept clean enough. The filter treats residual odor, not the source.
Carbon against fragrance
Carbon captures odor compounds; scented refills mask them and put some cats off. Carbon is more neutral for the animal.
Original against cut-to-size
Original filters fit the housing; carbon sheets to cut cost less and sometimes let air past the sides.

The questions people ask about odor filters & refills

Does a filter really remove odors?

It captures part of them at the air outlet. It never replaces cleaning the box, which remains the only action on the source.

How often do you change a litter-box carbon filter?

As the maker indicates and according to the number of cats, often every one to three months. A saturated filter captures nothing.

Are scented filters a good idea?

They mask the smell for the human and can make the cat refuse the box. Neutral carbon is the cautious choice.

Can a carbon sheet be cut to size?

On many boxes yes, provided the cut covers the whole housing. A badly fitted filter lets air past it.

Does the filter work on an open box?

No: with no single air outlet, it has nothing to treat. It is an accessory for covered boxes.

Can litter-box carbon be revived in the sun?

No, it saturates and gets replaced. Drying or washing it does not restore its capacity.

My box smells despite the filter — why?

The source is not being dealt with: litter not renewed often enough, a box needing a full clean, or unsuitable litter.

Does a carbon filter bother the cat?

It gives off no smell of its own, which is exactly its advantage over a scented deodoriser. What puts a cat off is the added fragrance, not the carbon.

Worth remembering, on odor filters & refills

A carbon filter treats residual odor, never the source: if the box smells despite it, cleaning is what needs revisiting. It only works on a covered box, carbon does not regenerate — and scented refills put some cats off.

Odor filters & refills in brief

Odor filters & refills, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. The figure published most often across these 3 products is carbon content, given by 1 of them — short of the four in five a column needs to compare rather than to display gaps. Each product page says what its own maker published.
