What it is

Where odor actually comes from

In order: the drawer, the seal around it, and the air above the litter. A carbon filter addresses the third. If a box smells despite a fresh filter, the seal is perished or the drawer has been left too long — and no filter fixes either.

Carbon, not perfume

The distinction matters more here than anywhere else on this site. A scented insert makes the room smell of something else and gives a sensitive cat a reason to go elsewhere. Carbon adds nothing.

Do carbon filters actually work?

They adsorb some of what passes them, which is worth having and is not a substitute for the two things that matter more: emptying the drawer on time and replacing a perished seal. A filter on a box with a leaking drawer is decoration.

Scented or unscented?

Unscented, always, in a litter box. Fragrance is one of the most common reasons a cat starts avoiding a box that was working — and an avoided box is a much larger problem than a faint smell.

Can I cut them to size?

These are cuttable, which is how a generic filter fits a proprietary slot. Cut on the generous side: a filter that rattles in its slot lets air round it rather than through it.
