A fountain that has become noisy has almost never failed: it has a furred impeller or a low reservoir. When a pump is genuinely dead, a €9 replacement restores a €60 fountain — provided the manufacturer sells one. The downsides that come with fountain pumps & spares

My pump is noisy — should I replace it?

Dismantle and clean it first: limescale and hair in the rotor are the most common cause. Replacement comes after.

How is a pump dismantled?

By removing the cover and the rotor, which generally comes free by hand. The instructions cover it — the operation is meant to be done regularly.

How do I descale it?

A soak in diluted white vinegar, then a thorough rinse. Limescale is the first enemy of these pumps.

Why did the pump stop?

Running dry is the most common cause. Always check the water level, especially before going away.

Are pumps interchangeable?

No: dimensions, flow and fitting are specific to each fountain. Check the exact reference.

How long does a pump last?

Several years with regular cleaning, far less if it runs dry or sits in very hard water.

Can the animal damage the cable?

That is a real risk. The cable must be secured and out of reach, like any accessible electrical cable.

Does a stronger pump wear the fountain out faster?

It does not strain the bowl, but it throws water past the spout and empties the reservoir sooner. Staying at the original flow avoids both nuisances.
