The best litter for self-cleaning boxes

An automatic box is a machine that sorts clumps from loose grains, and it can only do that if the clumps hold together when the rake or the drum moves them. That rules out most non-clumping litters immediately, and it makes clump strength, not scent, the specification that matters. We compare clumping, dust, tracking and weight per litre, and say plainly which machines require crystal litter and refuse everything else.

What we recommend

  1. FUKUMARU tofu and corn cat litter 10.8 kg bag

FUKUMARU Tofu and corn litter, 10.8 kg

A plant-based litter of 80% tofu and 20% corn pellets, which FUKUMARU states absorbs in two seconds and clumps in three. In an automatic box, that speed is the specification that matters.

    80% tofu, 20% corn pellets
    Weight
    10.8 kg
    Clumping
    FUKUMARU states 2 s absorption, 3 s clumping

    • Fast clumping is exactly what a rake or a drum needs to lift waste in one piece
    • Lighter to carry than clay for the same number of days
    • Several litter box makers exclude tofu litter from warranty because the grains swell — check your manual

Best for: A clumping automatic box in a flat, where weight and dust matter as much as price.

  2. FUKUMARU tofu and apple wood cat litter bag

FUKUMARU Tofu and apple wood litter, 10.8 kg

The same tofu base with apple wood pellets rather than corn, unscented and without pigment. It is the version to buy for a cat that has started avoiding a perfumed litter.

    Composition
80% tofu, 20% deodorised apple wood
    Weight
    10.8 kg
    Fragrance
    None — unscented, no pigment
    Odour control
FUKUMARU credits the apple wood pellets rather than perfume

    • Unscented: the most common reason a cat abandons an otherwise working box is fragrance
    • No pigment either, which matters for cats that groom immediately after digging
    • Same tofu warranty caveat as every plant litter

Best for: A cat that has started going elsewhere since the litter changed — this is the first thing to try.

  3. TRIXIE tofu clumping cat litter 4.5 kg bag

Trixie Tofu clumping litter, 4.5 kg

A 4.5-kilogram bag of tofu clumping litter from Trixie: the sensible way to test a switch to plant litter without committing to eleven kilos of it.

    Composition
    Plant fibre, tofu-based
    Weight
    4.5 kg
    Clumping
Trixie states firm clumps and fast absorption
    Odour
Trixie credits the natural plant fibres

    • A small bag is the right size for an experiment — cats reject litters, and eleven kilos of rejection is expensive
    • European brand with wide distribution and stable supply
    • 4.5 kg does not last long in a busy box — this is a trial size, not a monthly buy

Best for: Testing whether your cat and your automatic box accept tofu litter before buying it by the sack.
