Clipper guide combs and attachments

A guide comb sets the length you leave; the blade underneath sets the shortest length possible. Both matter, and the combination is where most home clips go wrong. We compare comb sets by actual cut length in millimeters rather than by the number molded into the plastic, and on the thing that matters more than either — whether the comb stays clipped on under load, because one that lifts halfway down a flank leaves a step no blending hides.

Multiple lengths
A set of guide combs covers several lengths with a single cutting head. Far cheaper than several heads.
Clipping the body
A comb avoids clipping right down and protects the skin. On the body it is nearly always what you want.
A comb lost in the dog's basket

The downsides that come with guide combs

A comb that clips onto your own pet clipper
Combs depend on the width and the fitting of the cutting head. A comb from another brand does not clip on, or takes play.
A plastic comb glides, a metal comb warms up
Plastic combs are light and warp with heat; metal combs hold their shape and glide differently over the coat.

A set covers every length and most owners use two. The count is a selling point before it is a need.

The questions people ask about guide combs

Are pet clipper combs universal?

No. They depend on the width and fitting of the cutting head, specific to each brand. The exact reference is the only guarantee.

Should I clip with or without a comb?

With a comb on the body, in the vast majority of cases: it protects the skin and leaves a suitable length. Without a comb, you clip right down.

Can a comb warp?

Plastic combs deform with the heat of the head. A warped comb gives an uneven cut that is hard to work out.

How is a comb cleaned?

In warm soapy water once the hair is removed, then dried completely before refitting.

Why is the cut uneven?

A comb badly clipped on, warped, or pressure that varies during the pass. You check the clip before blaming the clipper.

Does a metal comb cut better?

They do not warp and glide differently over the coat. Mostly a matter of habit and budget.

How many heights are needed?

Two suit most owners: one for the body, one for the shorter areas.

Does a comb change the clipping speed?

Yes: it increases the thickness of coat entering the blade at each pass, so the motor works harder. On a low-powered clipper, a long comb means moving at half the speed.

Worth remembering, on guide combs

A comb protects the skin and gives an even length: on the body it is nearly always what you want. They are not universal, and a plastic comb warped by heat gives an uneven cut that takes a long time to diagnose.
