  • Ceramic runs cooler than steel-on-steel, which matters most on the areas this blade is used for
  • Half a millimeter reaches between pads where nothing else will
  • Far too short for a body clip — this is not a general-purpose blade

Best for: Paw pads and clean-up work, alongside a size 10 rather than instead of it.

What it is

An Andis CeramicEdge size 30 blade: about 0.5 mm (0.02 in) of cut length, hardened carbon steel with a ceramic cutting edge, on the A5 snap-on fitting.

What it is for

Feet, faces, and matted areas that have to be cleared rather than tidied. At half a millimeter it leaves next to nothing, which is the point between paw pads where grit and mats collect and no comb can reach.

What it is not for

A body clip. A dog clipped all over at this length has effectively no coat — that is a veterinary preparation, not grooming, and skin left that bare needs protecting from sun and cold.

Heat, again

Ceramic against steel runs cooler. On the small, fiddly areas where this blade is used, the clipper hovers rather than sweeping, and hovering is what heats a blade.

The questions owners ask

Can I clip a dog with a size 30?

You should not. At about half a millimeter it leaves skin almost bare, which is a surgical length rather than a grooming one. Use it between paw pads and for detail clean-up, and put a 10 or a guide comb on for anything else.

What does the ceramic edge change?

Temperature. A ceramic cutter against a steel comb generates less heat than steel on steel, and on the small areas this blade is used for the machine tends to sit in one place — which is exactly where heat builds.

How do I look after it?

Dry it, oil it, store it dry. Carbon steel rusts, and a rusty blade pulls hair rather than cutting it. Two seconds with a cloth after each use is the whole maintenance routine.
