Coats that mat, and the blade that stops it · review
Oster Golden A5 2-speed review
The reference corded salon clipper, sold here without a blade. It is a machine bought for its motor and its blade system, and you choose the blade separately.
What we take from it A twenty-year machine with a blade bill. Buy it if you intend to learn blades; buy something cordless and quiet if you want to tidy a dog twice a year.
What it is
The Oster Golden A5, two-speed, with a 45 W universal motor — and, in this
listing, no blade. That is not an omission: in this system the blade is
selected for the job and bought separately.
The blade system is the product
A5 blades are the nearest thing pet grooming has to a standard fitting. They
run from surgical lengths to long finishing cuts, they are made by several
companies, and they will still be sold long after any cordless clipper on this
page has stopped being supported. A machine that takes them is a machine you
can keep.
What the listing does not say
Almost everything. Wattage, speed count, and that it comes without a blade —
that is the whole specification. No noise figure, no weight, no blade
compatibility list. We report what is published rather than filling the gaps,
and on a machine this old and this widely documented elsewhere, the gaps are
easy to fill from Oster’s own materials.
Who should not buy it
Anyone hoping to open a box and clip a dog that afternoon. Between choosing a
blade, ordering it and learning what each length leaves, this is a purchase
with a learning curve — which is exactly why it is still sold, unchanged, after
decades.

The questions owners ask
Why is it sold without a blade?
Because in the A5 system the blade is the choice. Lengths run from surgical to long, in several tooth patterns, from several manufacturers, and a professional buys the two or three that suit the coats they work on. Budget for at least one blade on top of the machine price, and check what you are ordering — the listing we checked states "ohne Schermesser", without blade.
What does the A5 system buy me?
Availability, forever. A5 blades are the closest thing this trade has to a standard: they interchange across brands, they are sold everywhere, and a clipper that takes them can be re-bladed in twenty years. That is worth more over the life of the machine than any feature on a sealed hobby clipper.
Is it noisy?
Louder than every cordless machine on this page, and Oster publishes no figure. A universal motor at 45 W in a metal body is a salon tool, and it sounds like one. For a nervous animal, that alone rules it out.

0.5 mm (0.02 in) veterinary cut · 115 g (4.1 oz) · spare blade head included
A 115-gram detail trimmer with a 0.5 mm (0.02 in) veterinary blade, for faces, paws and bellies rather than full clips. It comes with a second blade head.
Best for: Paw pads, faces and sanitary trims — the work a full-size clipper is too big and too loud to do.
Cordless · 120 min runtime · #10-1 blade head included
A cordless professional clipper with a lithium-ion pack rated for two hours and a #10 blade head in the box. Heiniger sells it on being quiet, which is unusual at this level.
Best for: Grooming several animals away from a socket — or one animal that will not tolerate a corded salon clipper.
55 dB · 6,800 rpm · 4 h runtime · four metal combs 3–25 mm (0.12 to 0.98 in)
The same class of clipper as the Pro Upgrade with metal guide combs instead of plastic ones, four hours of runtime, and stainless blades. The combs are the reason it costs more.
Best for: A thick or long coat where plastic combs have already slipped, and a household that clips regularly enough to notice the finish.
