Is tofu litter any good?

It clumps fast, weighs far less than clay and produces little dust — and several litter box makers exclude it from warranty because the grains swell, so the manual decides before the review does.

Tofu litter is a genuine improvement on clay in three ways and a genuine risk in one.

What is better

Weight: a 10.8 kg (23.8 lb) bag of tofu lasts about as long as a much heavier clay one, which matters if you carry it upstairs. Dust: far less, which matters inside an enclosed drum where dust settles on sensors. And clumping speed — FUKUMARU states two seconds to absorb and three to clump, which is what a rake needs.

What is riskier

The grains swell. PetPivot excludes plant litters outright; others accept tofu but exclude it from warranty. A jam in a drum is a jam full of waste, so this is worth the two minutes it takes to check your manual.

Flushing

Manufacturers often state it is flushable and local rules vary. Where there is doubt, bag it — a blocked drain costs more than a year of litter.

The sensible approach

Buy a small bag, run it for two weeks, and watch the machine rather than the marketing.
