No — registration is stored in the flap and survives battery changes on the models we review. Re-learning is only needed after a factory reset or when adding an animal.
It is a one-off setup, with two exceptions.
Normal operation
The chip numbers are held in the flap’s memory. Changing batteries does not erase them.
After a factory reset
Everything is cleared, and every animal has to be learned again. Worth knowing before pressing a reset button to solve an unrelated problem.
When adding an animal
Learn the new one; the existing ones stay. Capacities run to 25 or 40 pets on the flaps we review, so there is no practical limit.
If entry becomes unreliable
That is a battery or a chip-reading question, not a registration one. Change the cells first, then consider a collar tag.
This does not replace your device’s manual. Blade temperatures, locking mechanisms and cleaning procedures differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence over anything written here. Unplug a device before dismantling it, check a hot blade or an air nozzle against your own hand before it goes anywhere near an animal, and keep a mechanism that closes or rotates under supervision until you know how it behaves.
