Most do — the SureFlap runs on four AA cells for up to twelve months — and a flap with tired batteries reads erratically before it stops, which is why they are changed on a date rather than on a symptom.
Battery power is normal in this family and it has one consequence worth planning for.
The runtime
Up to twelve months on four AA cells for the flap we review. That is a once-a-year job if you write it down.
The failure mode
Not a sudden stop. A flap with weak cells reads intermittently first — the cat gets in three times out of four — and that is exactly the symptom people mistake for a chip problem.
What to do
Change them on a fixed date. Keep a spare set in the drawer beside the flap.
Mains-powered flaps
Some connected models take a mains adaptor. That removes the battery question and adds a cable to route through a door or a wall.
This does not replace your device’s manual. Blade temperatures, locking mechanisms and cleaning procedures differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence over anything written here. Unplug a device before dismantling it, check a hot blade or an air nozzle against your own hand before it goes anywhere near an animal, and keep a mechanism that closes or rotates under supervision until you know how it behaves.
