Introducing a water fountain to a cat

Fountains are bought because a cat is not drinking enough. That makes the introduction more delicate than usual, not less.

Run it before the cat meets it

Assemble, fill, and let it run for an hour. New pumps are noisiest when the air is still working out of them, and first impressions matter more here than almost anywhere.

Try the flow modes in order

Gentle first. A visible jet attracts some cats and repels others, and a fountain with three modes is three chances rather than one.

Keep the old bowl

For two weeks at least, in a different room. Removing every alternative is how a cautious cat ends up drinking less.

Set a filter reminder now

Two to four weeks, on a calendar rather than in your memory — and rinse the foam pre-filter weekly, which does more for pump life than any filter you buy.

This page is about equipment, not health. If an animal’s appetite, weight, drinking or toileting has changed, that belongs with a vet who can examine it — no appliance, and no page on this site, can tell you what a change means.

The questions owners ask

Where should the fountain go?

Away from the food bowl and away from the litter box, in a quiet spot the cat already passes. Cats avoid drinking next to where they eat, which is why the water bowl beside the food is so often ignored.

How long before I remove the old bowl?

Keep it for at least two weeks. A cat that dislikes the fountain and has no alternative simply drinks less, which is the opposite of what you bought it for.

The gear this assumes

Everything above works with what you already own. These are the products we would reach for, and each links to the full review rather than straight to a shop.

  • Catit PIXI stainless steel

2.5 L · stainless insert · three flow modes · lit level indicator

A 2.5-liter fountain with a stainless drinking surface, three flow settings and a nose that lights red when the water is low. The pump hangs in the water rather than sitting under the bowl.

Best for: A cat that has refused a fountain before — three flow settings are three chances rather than one.

  • PetSafe Drinkwell Avalon ceramic

    Ceramic · 2 L · filtered · submersible pump

The 2-liter ceramic Drinkwell, with free-falling streams rather than a single spout and a submerged pump. It is the middle of PetSafe’s ceramic range in both size and price.

Best for: A cat that drinks from taps: falling water is exactly what a running tap looks like at cat height.
