Running water, and the pump that keeps it quiet · review
Catit PIXI stainless steel review
A 2.5-liter fountain with a stainless drinking surface, three flow settings and a nose that lights red when the water is low. The pump hangs in the water rather than sitting under the bowl.
What we take from it The one to buy for a difficult drinker. The three flow modes and the low-water light solve the two problems every fountain owner eventually has.
What it is
A 2.5-liter cat fountain with a stainless drinking surface, three flow modes,
and a pump suspended in the water rather than mounted against the base. The
illuminated nose doubles as a water level indicator.
Why the drinking surface matters
Catit makes a point of the wide, shallow stainless insert, and it is a real
argument: a deep, narrow bowl brushes a cat’s whiskers on every drink, and
plenty of cats simply stop using one. A flat surface removes that entirely.
Stainless also resists the scratching that turns plastic bowls into biofilm
traps.
Three flows, one cat
Gentle flow, a jet through the nozzle head, or bubbling. Which one your cat
uses is not predictable, which is the whole point of having three: it converts
a purchase that either works or does not into one you can adjust.
The pump, and running dry
Suspending the pump in the water reduces the vibration that a base-mounted
pump transmits into the reservoir. A fountain that hums is almost always a
fountain that is low on water — hence the light on the nose.
What Catit sells you afterwards
Filters. As with every fountain on this page, price a year of them before
buying, because they are the cost you have not counted.
What we rate, and what we flag up
Strengths
Three flow modes: a fussy cat that ignores a jet will often drink from a gentle flow
The low-water indicator is visible from across the room — the single most useful feature on any fountain
A wide, shallow stainless surface keeps whiskers out of the sides of a bowl
One reference across all six of our markets
Compromises
Carbon filters are a Catit consumable and must be replaced regularly
A suspended pump is quieter but not silent — a fountain run dry always is
The novelty shape takes more shelf space than a plain bowl

The questions owners ask
Why do flow modes matter?
Because cats disagree about moving water. Some are drawn to a visible jet, others avoid anything that splashes and will only use a still, gently circulating surface. A fountain with one mode is a bet; a fountain with three lets you find out which one your cat accepts without buying a second machine.
What does the light actually do?
PIXI’s nose flashes red when the water level drops. That matters more than it sounds: a fountain pump running dry is what kills fountain pumps, and it is also the noise everyone complains about. A visible warning is cheaper than a replacement pump.
How much do the filters cost over a year?
That is the number to check before ordering, and it is the same question for every fountain here. Catit filters are proprietary; a year of them at the manufacturer’s recommended interval is a meaningful fraction of what the fountain costs.

A cat that has refused a fountain before — three flow settings are three chances rather than one.

Cordless · 2.8 L · 5-stage filter · stainless tray
A cordless fountain: Miaura states up to 30 days of battery life, a 2.8-liter tank and a five-stage filter. It is the only fountain here with no cable to route.
Best for: A room with no convenient socket, or a cat that has chewed a fountain cable before.
The 2-liter ceramic Drinkwell, with free-falling streams rather than a single spout and a submerged pump. It is the middle of PetSafe’s ceramic range in both size and price.
Best for: A cat that drinks from taps: falling water is exactly what a running tap looks like at cat height.
