Why buy six

Because the alternative is buying one every few weeks at a worse unit price, and because a filter that arrives late means a fountain running unfiltered. They keep indefinitely in a cupboard.

Original versus generic

Generic pads cut to shape exist and are cheaper. What they lose is the seal: a filter that does not fit its housing lets water round the edge, and unfiltered water passing beside a filter is the same as no filter. On a fountain whose whole selling point is water quality, that is a poor saving.

How often should the filter be changed?

Catit publishes an interval on the pack, and most fountain makers say two to four weeks. Treat that as an outside limit rather than a target — a filter in a warm kitchen with two cats is spent sooner than one in a cool hallway with a single drinker.

What does the filter actually do?

It catches hair and grit before the impeller, and the carbon handles taste and smell. The first job is the one that keeps the pump alive; the second is the one you notice.

Can I wash and reuse them?

The foam pre-filter in most fountains can be rinsed several times before it needs replacing. Carbon cannot be regenerated at home — once it is loaded, it is loaded.
