How long do pet fountain pumps last?

Years, if they are never run dry and the impeller is cleaned periodically — most pumps that fail early were starved of water or left with hair wrapped round the rotor.

Fountain pumps are simple and they die of two things.

Running dry

The commonest cause by far. A pump drawing air overheats. Fountains with a low-water indicator exist precisely because this is what kills them, and the indicator is worth paying for.

Hair round the rotor

It builds slowly, the note changes, and eventually the motor stalls. Monthly cleaning prevents it entirely.

What to do when one fails

Buy the original replacement if it exists — around a quarter of the price of a new fountain on the models we review. Check the flow rate on the housing before buying a generic: visually identical pumps span 60 to 220 l/h.

Cordless fountains

Have a second clock running: the battery. When it no longer holds a charge, a new pump does not help.

This does not replace your device’s manual. Blade temperatures, locking mechanisms and cleaning procedures differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence over anything written here. Unplug a device before dismantling it, check a hot blade or an air nozzle against your own hand before it goes anywhere near an animal, and keep a mechanism that closes or rotates under supervision until you know how it behaves.
