A freshly cleaned box is the most attractive one available, and many cats are simply waiting for it — it is a sign the box was overdue rather than a sign of anything wrong.
It is the clearest feedback you will get about your emptying schedule.
What it means
The cat prefers clean litter and has been tolerating the alternative. If it happens every time, the interval is too long — divide the manufacturer’s stated figure by the number of cats and empty on that.
Why it matters
A cat that finds the box unacceptable does not always wait. It goes elsewhere, and elsewhere is harder to fix than a calendar reminder.
The automatic box angle
These machines exist to keep the surface clean continuously, which is exactly what this behavior asks for. If your cat still waits for a full change, the drawer or the litter depth is the variable, not the machine.
When it is not about cleanliness
A cat that suddenly increases how often it goes, clean box or not, is a vet question. Frequency changes are one of the things they ask about.
