When a cat refuses the new litter box

A refused box is not stubbornness. It is a list of five variables, and you can test them one at a time.

One variable at a time

Change fragrance, wait a week. Then substrate, wait a week. Then placement. Changing two things at once means a result you cannot interpret.

Fragrance first, always

Unscented litter, no scented insert. This alone fixes a large share of refusals.

Then the shape

An enclosed drum is a tunnel with a moving floor. Open-topped machines exist because a significant number of cats will not enter one.

Then the noise and the delay

Lengthen the cleaning delay to the maximum the machine allows, and run cycles when the cat is not in the room.

This page is about equipment, not health. If an animal’s appetite, weight, drinking or toileting has changed, that belongs with a vet who can examine it — no appliance, and no page on this site, can tell you what a change means.

The questions owners ask

Where do I start?

With fragrance. Scented litter and scented deodorizing inserts are the most common reason a working box stops working, and switching to unscented costs the price of one bag.

Should I punish going elsewhere?

No — and if a cat that was reliable starts going elsewhere, that is a reason to see a vet as well as to change the box. Toileting changes are one of the signs vets ask about.

The gear this assumes

Everything above works with what you already own. These are the products we would reach for, and each links to the full review rather than straight to a shop.

  • Thereye ER-SC06 open XXL

    Open XXL · cats 1.5–12.5 kg (3.3 to 27.6 lb) · under 20 dB · 10 L waste

The cheapest genuinely available box here, open-topped, with the lowest stated noise figure of the ten and a 1.5 to 12.5 kg (3.3 to 27.6 lb) range that covers almost any cat.

Best for: A first automatic box: the price of a mid-range manual setup, an open shape cats accept, and no proprietary consumable.

  • Neakasa M1 Lite

    Open design · cats to 15 kg (33.1 lb) · 11 L waste · ≤50 dB

An open-topped drum box for cats that refuse enclosed machines, with the widest stated weight range here — up to 15 kg (33.1 lb) — and 6 infrared plus 4 weight sensors watching the cycle.

Best for: A large cat, or a nervous one that will not enter an enclosed machine — and a household that can put the box somewhere the litter scatter does not matter.
