Can I use crystal litter in a clumping machine?

No. Crystals never form a clump, so a rake or a sifting drum has nothing to lift and either sorts nothing or jams on the loose granules.

The two systems are mechanically incompatible, and the incompatibility runs both ways.

What crystals do

They absorb urine and dry solids. Nothing sets, nothing holds together, and there is no clump for a rake to lift. A ScoopFree Ultra is built around this and works perfectly; a clumping drum fills with loose granules.

What clumping litter does

It sets into a mass a rake can move. In a crystal machine — where the geometry assumes free-flowing granules — a clump is exactly what jams the mechanism.

The one machine that takes both

PetSafe states the SmartSpin is compatible with any litter, which is unusual. Read the manual for your own model before assuming it applies to yours.

If you want to switch systems

You are changing machines, not litter. That is worth knowing before buying a crystal machine on price and discovering the trays are the real cost.
