Empty the hopper completely once a month, wash and dry it fully before refilling, and take the bowl out to wash separately — kibble dust at the bottom is what absorbs moisture first.
A monthly routine that prevents the failure that ends these machines.
Empty, do not top up
Old kibble dust holds moisture. Tip the hopper out completely.
Wash and dry fully
Warm water, then dry. A damp hopper is worse than a dusty one — this is the step people rush.
The bowl separately
On feeders where the bowl lifts out, it goes in the dishwasher on most models. On those where it does not, expect a film you can only wipe.
The rotor and the outlet
Where kibble passes, dust accumulates. A dry brush is enough.
While you are there
Replace the desiccant on the maker’s schedule rather than when the food smells stale — by then the rotor has been grinding softened kibble for weeks.
This does not replace your device’s manual. Blade temperatures, locking mechanisms and cleaning procedures differ from model to model, and the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence over anything written here. Unplug a device before dismantling it, check a hot blade or an air nozzle against your own hand before it goes anywhere near an animal, and keep a mechanism that closes or rotates under supervision until you know how it behaves.
