Weight thresholds, kittens and automatic boxes

An animal below the detection threshold is an animal the machine does not know is there. That sentence is the whole of this page.

Find your machine’s number

Every manufacturer publishes a minimum detected weight, and several also publish an age limit. Both are on the listing or in the manual.

Compare it with your lightest animal

Not your average one. A household with a 6 kg (13.2 lb) tom and a 2.6 kg (5.7 lb) elderly female is governed by the second figure.

Below the threshold, use a manual tray

For as long as it takes. This is the one place on this site where the answer is to not use the machine.

Supervise the first weeks regardless

Sensors are layers of protection, not guarantees, and the manufacturer’s instructions on supervision are written for a reason.

This does not replace your machine’s manual. Sensor thresholds, cycle delays and temperature limits differ between models, and the manufacturer’s instructions for yours take precedence over anything written here.

The questions owners ask

What is a typical threshold?

The machines we review state ranges from about 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) upwards, and PETKIT excludes cats under six months outright regardless of weight. Read your own model’s figure — it is published, and it varies.

What should I do while the kitten is growing?

Keep a manual tray and leave the automatic box switched off or locked out of automatic mode until the cat is comfortably above the threshold. The machine is not the priority; the kitten is.

The gear this assumes

Everything above works with what you already own. These are the products we would reach for, and each links to the full review rather than straight to a shop.

  • PETKIT Pura Max 2

    76 L drum · 7 L waste · 20 cm (7.9 in) entry · cats 2–8 kg (4.4 to 17.6 lb)

The best-documented box on this page: PETKIT publishes the drum volume, the internal dimensions, the entry height, the cat weight range and the age limit. It takes any clumping litter except crystal.

Best for: A multi-cat household with adult cats between 2 and 8 kg (17.6 lb), a hard floor, and no intention of changing litter type.

  • Thereye ER-SC06 open XXL

    Open XXL · cats 1.5–12.5 kg (3.3 to 27.6 lb) · under 20 dB · 10 L waste

The cheapest genuinely available box here, open-topped, with the lowest stated noise figure of the ten and a 1.5 to 12.5 kg (3.3 to 27.6 lb) range that covers almost any cat.

Best for: A first automatic box: the price of a mid-range manual setup, an open shape cats accept, and no proprietary consumable.

  • PetPivot AS15 open-top

    Open design · cats 1.5–10 kg (3.3 to 22 lb) · 32 dB · mineral & bentonite only

A stated 32 dB, open-topped, with an entry weight of 1.5 kg (3.3 lb) — as low as any box on this page. Its litter compatibility is the narrowest of the ten, and that is the thing to check first.

Best for: A small cat in a quiet flat, on clay litter, where noise at night is the deciding factor.
