What we take from it The cheap tool that makes the expensive one work. Buy it with a deShedding tool rather than instead of one.
What it is
A rake comb with rounded stainless teeth that rotate through 360°, sold by
FURminator for dogs and cats with dense coats — topcoat over undercoat.
Where it fits in the sequence
FURminator is explicit about this: brushing comes before a deShedding tool.
The rake opens knots and lifts the coat; the deshedding edge then reaches the
undercoat without dragging. Skipping the first step is what makes people
describe deshedding tools as painful.
The rotating teeth
A fixed tooth meeting a knot pulls the skin. A tooth that turns rolls through
it. That is the whole engineering argument, and it is why this comb works on
cats, which have almost no tolerance for being pulled.
What it will not do
Clear an undercoat. It is a preparation tool, and on its own it leaves the
moult where it is. Judged as a deshedding tool it disappoints; judged as the
first of two, it earns its place.

The questions owners ask
Do I need this as well as a deShedding tool?
If the coat knots, yes. FURminator says so themselves: brushing is a step before using a deShedding tool. Running a blade into a knotted coat pulls at the skin and blunts the tool; opening the coat first makes the second pass quick and painless.
Why rotating teeth?
Because a fixed tooth that meets a knot either stops or pulls. A tooth that can turn rolls through it. On a cat — which will tolerate roughly one unpleasant sensation before leaving — that difference decides whether grooming happens at all.
Cat or dog tool?
FURminator lists both. What matters is the coat: dense, double-layered and prone to knots. A short single coat needs neither this nor much else.

This one and its buyer, among pet devices
The step before everything else: a dense or slightly knotted coat that a deshedding tool would simply drag on.
