FURminator deShedding L short hair review

The short-hair version of the same tool, for large dogs whose coat is under 5 cm (2 in) — labradors, boxers, staffies with a dense undercoat and nothing to grip.

What we take from it The one that surprises people: short-coated dogs shed more than they look like they should, and this is the tool that proves it.

What it is

The size L deShedding tool for short coats — under 5 cm (2 in) — on dogs of 23 to 41 kg (90.4 lb). Same stainless edge and rounded corners as the long-hair version, with teeth set for a dense short coat.

Short coats moult all year

Long-coated dogs shed in visible seasons. Short-coated ones shed continuously and quietly, and the hair ends up woven into fabric where a vacuum struggles with it. That is why a weekly session with a tool that reaches the undercoat does more for the house than any amount of brushing after the fact.

Pressure, not force

A rigid edge does not follow the dog’s shape. Light pressure, short strokes, and care over hips and ribs. If the skin reddens, the pressure was wrong — the tool is designed to lift hair, not to scrape.

Same rules as the long-hair version

One to two sessions a week on FURminator’s guidance, never on mats, and never as a daily habit on the same patch.

What we rate, and what we flag up

Strengths

  • The right geometry for a short dense coat, where long-hair tools do nothing
  • Removes the undercoat that a rubber mitt only redistributes
  • Same rounded-corner edge as the long-hair version
  • One reference on all six markets

Compromises

  • Short-coated dogs moult continuously rather than seasonally — this is a weekly commitment
  • Easy to over-use on a thin coat
  • US price sits well above the European ones

The questions owners ask

Why does a short-haired dog need a deshedding tool at all?

Because short coats have undercoats too, and short hairs are the ones that weave into upholstery. A rubber mitt lifts what is already loose on the surface; a deshedding edge reaches the layer that is about to shed. The difference shows up on the sofa rather than on the dog.

Can I use the long-hair version on a short coat?

It will not work well. The teeth sit at a different depth, and on a short coat a long-hair tool rides above the undercoat entirely. FURminator’s 5 cm (2 in) cut-off is the whole reason the two versions exist.

Will it scratch the skin?

Not if the pressure is light and the corners stay off the body. The edge is rigid, so it follows your hand rather than the animal’s contours — go gently over hips, ribs and anywhere bony, and stop if the skin pinks up.
