FURminator deShedding L long hair review

The long-hair deShedding tool for large dogs: a stainless edge that reaches through the topcoat and lifts the undercoat, sized for animals of 23 to 41 kg (50.7 to 90.4 lb).

What we take from it The reference deshedding tool, and worth its price over a generic copy for one reason: the sizing is honest and the edge is finished properly.

What it is

FURminator’s size L deShedding tool for long-coated dogs of 23 to 41 kg (50.7 to 90.4 lb): a stainless edge with rounded corners that passes through the topcoat and lifts loose undercoat out.

Sizing that means something

Most deshedding brushes are sold in one size and described as suitable for everything. FURminator sizes by weight and by coat length, with a 5 cm (2 in) cut-off between the short and long versions. That is the difference between a tool that reaches the undercoat and one that skates over it.

It is a blade, and it behaves like one

The edge removes loose hair very effectively, and used too often it takes living coat with it. FURminator’s own guidance — one to two sessions a week — is the number to follow. In a heavy moult, several short passes over a few days achieve more than one long session, and do less to the coat.

Where it stops

Mats. A deshedding tool pulls at a mat rather than clearing it, and a mat against the skin has to be cut out by someone who can see what is underneath. That is a groomer’s job, and no brush on this page changes it.

Catalogued and unsold: the American Amazon shop lists the reference with nobody behind it.

What we rate, and what we flag up

Strengths

  • Sized by weight AND coat length — the only brand here that separates the two
  • Rounded edge corners, which is what keeps a rigid blade off skin
  • Ejection button on the FURminator range makes clearing the tool one-handed
  • One reference on all six of our markets

Compromises

  • A deshedding edge cuts hair as well as pulling it — over-use thins a coat
  • Wrong size or wrong coat length and it either does nothing or does too much
  • More expensive than the generic deshedding brushes it is copied by

The questions owners ask

How often should I use it?

FURminator suggests one to two sessions a week, and that is a ceiling rather than a target. This is a blade, not a comb: run it over the same patch daily and you thin the coat rather than clear the undercoat. In heavy moult, more frequent short sessions beat long ones.

Long hair or short hair version?

Match the tool to the coat, not to the dog’s appearance. FURminator draws the line at 5 cm (2 in) of hair length. A long-hair tool on a short coat sits too far off the skin; a short-hair tool on a long coat drags and pulls.

Is 90% of loose hair a real figure?

It is FURminator’s claim, published on the listing, and we report it as theirs. What is not in dispute is that a deshedding edge removes far more undercoat per pass than a pin brush — which is also why it needs using sparingly.
