SureFlap Microchip Pet Door, brown review

A microchip pet door for large cats and small dogs, naming all three chip standards, with a collar tag supplied.

What we take from it The same SureFlap Microchip Pet Door as the white one on this shelf, in brown, for $14.26 less — and this is the listing that says a collar tag is supplied. Three chip standards named, 32 identities, three-year warranty.

What you are getting

A microchip pet door for large cats and small dogs, opening 6 11/16 × 7 inches, storing 32 identities, on four C cells for up to a year. Three-year warranty. $213.68.

It names the three chip standards, which the rest of the shelf does not

“Works with 9 (Avid Secure), 10 (FDXA) and 15 (FDXB) digit microchip numbers.”

That is the sentence the shelf’s buying tip asks for. A 15-digit number is FDX-B and works everywhere; a 9 or 10-digit number is older and only some doors take it. Four of the six doors in this group say “all common microchips” or nothing. This one, and its white twin, name them.

The same door in white costs $14.26 more

SureFlap sells this door on this shelf in two colors: white at $227.94, brown at $213.68. Same opening, same three standards, same 32 identities, same four C cells, same twelve months, same three-year warranty.

What this listing adds is one line the white one does not have: “one tag supplied with the product”. The white listing says tags “are sold separately for pets without microchips”.

Fourteen dollars and a collar tag, for the color that is not white.

The size limit, published where others are silent

“Your pet’s shoulders should ideally be no wider than 6½ inches and the circumference of their waistline at its widest point no more than 20 inches.”

No other door on this shelf publishes an animal dimension. A flap opening tells you the hole; shoulder width tells you whether the animal goes through it. For anything bigger, the PetSafe Electronic door here takes dogs to 100 lb — and reads a key rather than a chip.

Entry only, with a curfew

Scans on entry; any animal may exit. A programmable curfew locks and unlocks at set times, which is the same function as the Cat Mate timer at half the price and the PetSafe SmartDoor app at a quarter more.

What is not published

Cut-out dimensions — the flap opening is given, the hole to cut is not — and no weight beyond the 1 kg shipping figure.

What we rate, and what we flag up

Strengths

  • Names all three chip standards individually, which the shelf asks you to check
  • Publishes an animal size limit, not only a flap opening
  • $14.26 less than the identical white version, and ships with a collar tag

Compromises

  • Entry only — exits cannot be controlled per animal
  • Four C cells, a less common size than the AA the DualScan uses
  • Cut-out dimensions are not published, only the flap opening

The questions owners ask

Is it different from the white one?

In color and in two lines. Both are the SureFlap Microchip Pet Door: same 6 11/16 × 7 inch opening, same three chip standards, same 32 identities, same four C cells and three-year warranty. This brown listing says one collar tag is supplied; the white one says tags are sold separately. And it costs $14.26 less.

Will my cat fit through it?

SureFlap publishes the limit, which almost nothing else here does: shoulders no wider than 6½ inches and a waist under 20 inches. That is a large cat or a small dog. Measure across the shoulders rather than guessing from weight — a long thin cat and a short round one of the same weight do not pass the same hole.

What if my cat has an old 10-digit chip?

It works. This door reads 9-digit Avid Secure, 10-digit FDXA and 15-digit FDXB numbers, and says so by name. That is the reason to prefer a listing that names standards over one that says "all common microchips": the older numbers are exactly the case where "common" stops being a useful word.
