SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap review

The plain SureFlap: it reads your cat’s chip, keeps the neighbor’s cat out, runs a year on four AA cells, and has no app at all. It is the one most households actually need.

What we take from it The default microchip flap. Buy the Connect versions only if you genuinely want the app — this one does the actual job for far less.

What it is

A microchip cat flap: it reads the chip already in your cat, opens for that number, and stays shut for everything else. Four AA cells run it for up to twelve months.

The problem it solves

Two problems, in fact. The neighbor’s cat coming in to eat, and your own cat being unable to get back because a magnetic flap has swung shut on its collar. A chip is not lost, not removed, and not shared, which is why chip-reading flaps replaced magnetic ones entirely.

What it does not do

Report. There is no app, no log of comings and goings, and no notification. If you want to know when your cat came home, that is the Connect models further down this page — and they cost roughly twice as much for that single difference.

Fitting

Doors, windows and walls, with mounting adaptors sold separately. Budget for the adaptor at the same time as the flap: a wall tunnel or a glass adaptor is a significant fraction of the flap’s price, and discovering that after ordering is the usual sequence.

The questions owners ask

Will it read my cat’s chip?

Check the number first. A 15-digit chip is the FDX-B standard and works with every flap on this page; 9 and 10-digit chips are older types that only some models read. Any vet can read the chip in seconds, and it is also on the registration paperwork.

What if the batteries die while I am away?

The flap stops reading and stays in its last mechanical state, which is why a year of battery life is a specification worth having rather than a convenience. Change them on a date rather than on a symptom — a low-battery warning is not much use to a cat outside in the rain.

Can I fit it into glass?

Yes, with the right adaptor and a hole cut by a glazier. Take the hole size from SureFlap’s own template rather than from the flap you are holding, because the cut is permanent and the pane is not cheap.
