SureFlap Microchip Cat Flap Connect review

The standard-sized Connect flap: the same chip reading as the plain model, with the app that logs when your cat came and went.

What we take from it The Connect for people who want the log rather than the curfew. Same access, more information, considerably more money.

What it is

A standard-sized SureFlap Connect: chip or RFID tag reading, app monitoring of entries and exits, fitting into doors, glass or walls with the usual separate adaptors.

What the log is for

Not surveillance — pattern. A cat’s outdoor routine is remarkably stable, and the useful signal is a change in it. A log that shows four trips a day dropping to one is information you would not otherwise have, and it belongs in a conversation with a vet rather than in a conclusion of your own.

The difference from the plain flap

Mechanically, none. The chip reading, the locking modes and the fitting are the same. What you are buying is the record of what happened while you were out, which is either worth the premium to you or is not.

Fitting into an existing hole

Standard cat flap dimensions, so an existing aperture usually takes it. Measure before ordering rather than after — SureFlap publishes a template, and the larger Connect door on this page does not fit a standard hole.

Availability

Catalogued and unsold: the American Amazon shop lists the reference with nobody behind it.

What we rate, and what we flag up

Strengths

  • The activity log is genuinely useful for a cat whose routine has changed
  • Standard cat-flap size, so it fits an existing hole
  • Reads chips or RFID tags
  • One reference on all six markets

Compromises

  • Everything the app adds depends on the hub and the account staying alive
  • Costs substantially more than the plain flap for information rather than access
  • Adaptors for glass and walls are separate purchases

The questions owners ask

Is the monitoring worth the extra?

It depends what you would do with it. Knowing the cat is home is pleasant. Noticing in a log that a cat that used to go out four times a day now goes out once is the kind of change worth mentioning to a vet — and that is the case where the extra money buys something.

Will it fit the hole from my old flap?

This is the standard-sized Connect, so in most cases yes — measure the existing aperture against SureFlap’s template before ordering. The larger Connect pet door on this page needs a bigger hole cut.

What happens if Sure Petcare turns off the service?

The flap keeps reading chips and keeps opening; the app features stop. That is the honest risk on every connected product here, and it is the reason the plain flap remains a reasonable purchase.
