What it is

A 50 mm (1.97 in) extension for the tunnel of a SureFlap cat flap, which is 70 mm (2.76 in) as supplied. It fits the standard, DualScan and Connect flaps.

Why it exists

A cat flap is designed for a door. Walls are thicker than doors, and the part that crosses the wall is not included with the flap — so the fitting that looks straightforward in the photograph needs parts that cost a significant fraction of the flap itself.

Do the arithmetic first

Wall thickness, minus 70 mm (2.76 in), divided by 50. Five extenders is not unusual in masonry. That number belongs in the decision about which flap to buy, because it changes the total by more than the difference between models.

The cat’s view

A long tunnel is a commitment. Cats that walk through a flap in a door will often hesitate at a 300 mm (11.8 in) corridor for days. Propping it open at first, and patience, are the fitting instructions nobody prints.

The questions owners ask

How many extenders does a wall need?

Measure the wall, subtract the 70 mm (2.76 in) the flap already provides, and divide by 50. A 300 mm (11.8 in) masonry wall needs about five, and that arithmetic should happen before you buy the flap, not after you have cut the hole.

Can I use a piece of pipe instead?

People do, and it usually shows: the flap needs a square, sealed, correctly aligned tunnel or it drafts and jams. On an exterior wall the seal is also what keeps rain out of the cavity.

Does the tunnel affect how the cat uses the flap?

Yes. A long tunnel is a corridor a cat has to commit to, and nervous cats hesitate at them. If your wall is very thick, expect a longer settling-in period and prop the flap open at first.
