SureFlap Microchip Pet Door Connect review

The large Connect flap: app control, a programmable curfew, and an opening of 178 × 170 mm (7.01 × 6.69 in) for big cats and small dogs.

What we take from it Buy it for the curfew and the size, not for the monitoring. If neither applies, the plain SureFlap does the same reading for half the money.

What it is

The large SureFlap with app connectivity: it reads a chip or a Sure Petcare RFID tag, connects to the Sure Petcare app, locks and unlocks on a schedule, and has an opening of 178 × 170 mm (7.01 × 6.69 in).

The curfew earns its keep

Everything else the app does is pleasant. The curfew is the reason people buy this flap: it decides, at a fixed time, that the cat comes in and stays in. Anyone who has stood at a door at eleven at night with a torch understands the value immediately.

Size

A standard cat flap is sized for an average cat. Maine Coons, large mixed breeds and small dogs are not average, and a flap they have to compress themselves through is a flap they eventually stop using. This one is built for them.

The hub question

Connectivity runs through the Sure Petcare hub, and it is not always bundled. Read what the listing includes — the flap works mechanically without it, but every feature you paid extra for lives behind it.

What we rate, and what we flag up

Strengths

  • The curfew is the feature: the flap locks itself at night whether or not you remember
  • A larger opening than a standard cat flap, for heavy or long cats
  • Reads chips or Sure Petcare RFID tags, so a chip that reads badly is not the end
  • Same reference on all six markets

Compromises

  • Needs the Sure Petcare hub to connect — check what is in the box before ordering
  • App-dependent features stop being features if the account or the hub goes
  • Roughly twice the price of the plain flap for the same mechanical job

The questions owners ask

What does the curfew actually do?

It locks the flap at a set time and unlocks it at another. In practice it is how you get a cat in before the roads get busy without waiting up: the flap lets the cat in but not out after the curfew begins. It is the single most used feature on the Connect range.

Do I need a hub?

The Connect range talks to the Sure Petcare app through a hub, and the hub is not always included in the box. Check the listing you are buying: a Connect flap without a hub is an expensive plain flap until the hub arrives.

Is the bigger opening worth it?

If your cat is large, yes — 178 × 170 mm (7.01 × 6.69 in) accommodates animals that squeeze through a standard flap or refuse it entirely. If your cat is average, the extra size mostly means a bigger hole in your door.

Our score

8.8/ 10

Buy it for the curfew and the size, not for the monitoring. If neither applies, the plain SureFlap does the same reading for half the money.
