PetSafe Microchip Cat Flap review

The cheapest microchip flap here apart from the Cat Mate, reading 15-digit chips for up to 40 animals, with four manual locking modes and double magnetic closing points.

What we take from it The value microchip flap. Check the chip standard first; if it is 15 digits, this does what the SureFlap does for noticeably less.

What it is

A microchip cat flap that reads 15-digit chip IDs, stores up to 40 of them, and offers four manual modes: open, closed, in only and out only.

The chip standard is the whole decision

PetSafe specifies 15-digit chips — the FDX-B standard used across Europe for years. Cats chipped long ago may carry a 9 or 10-digit number, and this flap will not read it. That single line decides whether this is a bargain or an expensive mistake, and it is checkable in advance in one phone call to a vet.

Forty pets

More a statement about the firmware than a useful feature, but it does mean that a household with several cats, or one that fosters, will never meet a limit.

Seals

Energy-efficient seals and double magnetic closing points. On an exterior door, this is the specification that decides whether the kitchen has a draft all winter — and it is far more important, day to day, than any app.

What we rate, and what we flag up

Strengths

  • Cheaper than the plain SureFlap and does the same core job
  • Forty pets is far more than any household needs — no practical limit
  • "In only" and "out only" modes cover the vet visit and the storm
  • Weather seals and magnetic closure, which matters on an exterior door

Compromises

  • Reads 15-digit chips: an older 9 or 10-digit chip will not work
  • No app, no log
  • A flap is only as weatherproof as its fitting

The questions owners ask

What if my cat has an older chip?

Then this flap is not the one. PetSafe specifies 15-digit chips; cats chipped many years ago may carry a 9 or 10-digit number, and those need a flap that explicitly supports the older standards or a collar-tag door instead. Read the number before ordering.

What are the four modes for?

"In only" keeps a cat home before a vet appointment. "Out only" is for cleaning or when a strange cat has learned the flap. "Closed" is a storm. "Open" is the rest of the year. They are mechanical settings, not app functions, which means they work when everything else does not.

Do the seals really help?

On an exterior door in winter, a flap is a hole. Seals and magnetic closing points are what stop a draft from running through the kitchen — and they are the difference between a flap that stays shut in wind and one that clatters all night.
