Tractive GPS Dog (2025 Edition) review

Tractive’s dog tracker: live location in more than 175 countries, resting heart and breathing rate, sleep and activity, and bark and scratch monitoring.

What we take from it The default dog tracker in Europe, and deservedly. Price three years of subscription into the decision before comparing it with anything cheaper.

What it is

Tractive’s 2025 dog tracker: live GPS with no range limit, escape alerts, coverage in more than 175 countries, resting heart and breathing rate, sleep and activity, and bark and scratch monitoring.

What it is genuinely good at

Finding a dog that has gone. Everything else — the health graphs, the bark counts — is secondary to a live position on a map, updated fast enough to follow on foot. That is the feature you buy it for and, with luck, never use.

The recurring cost

A subscription, from €5 a month, covering the SIM. Over three years that is more than the tracker. It is not a hidden cost — Tractive prints it — but it is the number that should be in the comparison rather than the sticker price.

Behavior data, read carefully

Barking and scratching counted over a day is information; what it means is not. A dog that has started scratching more may have a skin problem, a behavioral one, or a new carpet. The graph tells you to ask; a vet answers.

What we rate, and what we flag up

Strengths

  • Coverage in over 175 countries — it follows you on holiday rather than stopping at the border
  • Escape alerts as well as live tracking
  • Behavior monitoring that is genuinely dog-specific, not a cat product rebadged
  • One reference on all six markets

Compromises

  • Compulsory subscription, as with every real tracker
  • The health and behavior features push you toward the dearer plans
  • On a small dog, weight and collar fit need checking as carefully as on a cat

The questions owners ask

Does it work abroad?

Tractive states coverage in over 175 countries, which is what separates a cellular tracker from a radio one. Check that your plan includes the country rather than assuming — coverage and plan are two different things, and holidays are exactly when a dog runs.

What is bark monitoring for?

Counting. Owners are poor witnesses to what a dog does when they are out, and "he barks a bit" and "he barked for two hours" are different problems with different answers. The tracker counts; what to do about the count is a trainer’s or a vet’s question.

Cat model or dog model?

Take the one made for the animal. The cat Mini is lighter with a smaller battery and a breakaway collar; the dog version is heavier with more runtime and a collar meant to stay on. Fitting a dog tracker to a cat is the mistake that ends with a collar caught on a fence.
