What it is

Two black textile clips for the Tractive DOG 6, fitting collars up to 5 cm (2 in) wide.

Wide collars are the reason

The clips supplied in the box suit ordinary collars. Working dogs, large breeds and anything wearing a padded collar need more, and a clip that barely closes is a clip that will open in a hedge.

Where the unit should sit

On top of the neck. A GPS receiver under a dog’s throat spends its life shielded by the animal and dragged along the ground every time it lies down — which shows up as slower fixes and more wear.

A wear part

Textile clips lose tension. When the tracker starts to rotate on the collar, the clip is finished, and that is the moment to change it rather than the moment after.

The questions owners ask

Why do wide collars need a different clip?

Because the standard clip is sized for a narrower strap and will not close around a 5 cm (2 in) collar — or closes badly, which is worse. Large breeds and working dogs are exactly the animals most likely to be wearing a tracker in rough ground.

Should the tracker sit on top or under the neck?

On top, where a GPS antenna has a clearer view of the sky and where the unit is least likely to be knocked. Under the throat it is shielded by the dog and rubbed by the ground when the dog lies down.

How often should clips be replaced?

When they lose tension, which shows as a tracker that has started to rotate on the collar. That is the point at which a tracker goes missing, so replacing early is the cheap decision.
