What it is

A reusable leak-proof tray for the ScoopFree system, refilled with PetSafe crystal litter by hand.

The arithmetic

Disposable trays are bought several times a year, for ever. This is bought once. Anyone who owns a ScoopFree for more than a few months and has looked at the running total has already worked out what this page is about.

What you give up

The premise. A ScoopFree with disposable trays is a machine you never look inside; with a reusable tray you empty and wash it like any other litter box, which is less pleasant and considerably cheaper.

Rounded edges, oddly, matter

Square internal corners hold spent crystals that no amount of tipping dislodges. Rounded ones empty cleanly, which is the difference between a tray that stays serviceable and one that gets replaced anyway.

The questions owners ask

Is it worth switching from disposable trays?

On cost, almost always. On convenience, that depends on why you bought the machine — if the appeal was never touching waste, refilling a tray by hand undoes part of it. Most people switch after the second or third pack of disposables.

Which litter does it take?

PetSafe crystal, the same as the disposable trays. The ScoopFree Ultra’s rake and geometry are built around crystals; clumping clay in this tray will not work any better than it does in the disposable one.

How often does it need washing?

At each litter change, and properly — a tray that has held crystals for weeks holds a film as well. Warm water and a brush; leave detergents to dry off completely before refilling.
