Oster

A machine you buy into rather than buy

Oster’s Golden A5 has been in production, essentially unchanged, for decades. It appears here with one of its blades, because on its own it does not cut anything.

What we found writing the reviews

It is sold without a blade. The listing says so, and it changes the price comparison entirely: budget for at least one blade on top of the machine.

The A5 fitting is what you are buying. Blades in every length, from several manufacturers, interchangeable across brands, and still sold decades later. That is the closest thing pet grooming has to a standard, and it is why a corded clipper from the 1970s design lineage is still a rational purchase.

The listing publishes almost nothing else. Wattage, two speeds, no blade. No noise figure, no weight. We report what is published and note that Oster’s own materials carry considerably more.

Availability

The machine and the Cryogen-X blade both carry one reference across all six markets. Neither had a live offer in the US or UK stores when we checked the machine.

Every Oster product we have reviewed

  • Oster Golden A5 2-speed

    Two speeds · 45 W universal motor · supplied without a blade

The reference corded salon clipper, sold here without a blade. It is a machine bought for its motor and its blade system, and you choose the blade separately.

Best for: Someone buying into the A5 blade system deliberately — a groomer, or an owner of several dogs who will own this machine for twenty years.
