Enclosed drum against open top
Does the cat go into a drum, or does it not?
Both are large app-controlled boxes with layered sensors. One is a tunnel with a rotating floor; the other looks like the tray your cat already uses.

A tick marks the better answer on that line only. Counting ticks does not decide the page — the two verdicts below do, because these machines answer different questions.
Take the Pura Max 2 for a mid-sized adult cat on a hard floor, and for the documentation: PETKIT publishes the entry height, the internal diameter and the weight range, which is what tells you in advance whether your cat fits.
Take the M1 Lite for a large cat, a nervous one, or any cat moving straight off a manual tray. The open top is the shape they accept, and the 11-liter bin is the largest here.
Both publish layered systems — PETKIT’s xSecure with infrared, weight and anti-pinch sensing, Neakasa’s six infrared and four weight sensors. The meaningful difference is that an open box has no enclosure for a cat to be inside in the first place.
Common enough that the open design exists. A cat that has always used an open tray sees a drum as a tunnel with a moving floor, and refusal is the most expensive outcome in this category.
76 L drum · 7 L waste · 20 cm (7.9 in) entry · cats 2–8 kg (4.4 to 17.6 lb)
The best-documented box on this page: PETKIT publishes the drum volume, the internal dimensions, the entry height, the cat weight range and the age limit. It takes any clumping litter except crystal.
Best for: A multi-cat household with adult cats between 2 and 8 kg (17.6 lb), a hard floor, and no intention of changing litter type.
Open design · cats to 15 kg (33.1 lb) · 11 L waste · ≤50 dB
An open-topped drum box for cats that refuse enclosed machines, with the widest stated weight range here — up to 15 kg (33.1 lb) — and 6 infrared plus 4 weight sensors watching the cycle.
Best for: A large cat, or a nervous one that will not enter an enclosed machine — and a household that can put the box somewhere the litter scatter does not matter.
