What it is

Activated carbon replacement filters for PetSafe’s Drinkwell ceramic fountains, listed for the 1.8, 3.7 and 7.5-liter models as well as the Sedona and Avalon.

One part, several machines

Most fountain makers sell a filter per model. PetSafe’s ceramic range shares one, which removes the usual problem of ordering the wrong pack and discovering it a week later.

What it does and does not do

Carbon handles taste and odor; the foam element in front of it keeps hair and grit away from the impeller. Neither cleans the pump housing, which needs opening on a schedule — a fountain that has started to hum has a furred impeller, not a tired filter.

Availability

Catalogued and unsold: the American Amazon shop lists the reference with nobody behind it.

The questions owners ask

Does one filter really fit several fountains?

PetSafe lists this filter for the 1.8, 3.7 and 7.5-liter ceramic fountains as well as the Sedona and Avalon. That is unusually broad in this category and it is a genuine convenience if you run more than one.

Filter or clean the pump?

Both, and they solve different problems. The filter handles what is in the water; the pump housing collects a film that no filter reaches. A fountain that has become noisy needs the pump opened, not a new filter.

Is a filter necessary at all?

The foam layer protects the impeller, so yes if you want the pump to last. The carbon is about taste and smell, which matters mostly to fussy drinkers — the animals a fountain was bought for in the first place.
