FURminator

Sizes its tools by weight and coat length, which nobody else does

FURminator makes the deshedding tools everyone else copies. Four are reviewed here: two deShedding edges, a rake comb and a dual brush.

What we found writing the reviews

The sizing is the product. Most deshedding brushes are sold in one size for everything. FURminator sizes by weight band and by coat length, with a 5 cm (2 in) cut-off between the short and long-hair tools. Buying the wrong one is the usual reason people find these tools disappointing.

They publish a frequency. One to two sessions a week, on the listing. That is unusual and it is the right instruction: a deshedding edge cuts as well as lifts, and daily use on the same patch thins a coat rather than clearing the moult.

They also publish the sequence. The rake comb listing says, in effect, brush before you deshed. A brand telling you to use a cheaper tool first is worth noting.

Availability

All four tools carry one reference on all six of our markets. The US prices run consistently above the European ones — sometimes by a factor of three — which our price labels exclude rather than average.

Dogs 23–41 kg (50.7 to 90.4 lb) · coat over 5 cm (2 in) · stainless deshedding edge

The long-hair deShedding tool for large dogs: a stainless edge that reaches through the topcoat and lifts the undercoat, sized for animals of 23 to 41 kg (50.7 to 90.4 lb).

Best for: A large long-coated dog in moult — golden retrievers, collies, shepherds with a full undercoat.

  • FURminator deShedding L short hair

Dogs 23–41 kg (50.7 to 90.4 lb) · coat under 5 cm (2 in) · stainless deshedding edge

The short-hair version of the same tool, for large dogs whose coat is under 5 cm (2 in) — labradors, boxers, staffies with a dense undercoat and nothing to grip.

Best for: Labradors, boxers, beagles — short coats that shed constantly and defeat ordinary brushes.

  • FURminator Dual brush

Two sides — wire pins and boar bristle · dogs and cats · most coat types

A two-sided brush: stiff wire pins on one face to detangle and clean, soft boar bristle on the other to lift dirt and finish the topcoat.

Best for: Daily maintenance between deshedding sessions, and any animal that will not tolerate a blade.

  • FURminator Rake comb

360° rotating stainless teeth · for dense double coats · dogs and cats

A rake comb with rounded stainless teeth that rotate through 360°, meant for working knots out of a dense coat before a deshedding tool touches it.

Best for: The step before everything else: a dense or slightly knotted coat that a deshedding tool would simply drag on.
